The Association of Public Art (aPA), Fung Collaboratives, and Cai Guo Qiang partner with Velo-Park to present World Premier of Fireflies!
Velo-Park began working with the Association of Public Art, Fung Collaboratives, and artist Cai Guo Qiang in 2015 to present Fireflies in celebration of the centennial of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Velo-Park consulted on the project, directed the Opening Night Performance, and managed the operation during its four-week installation.
To follow-up the World Premier of Fireflies in Philadelphia, the Baltimore Office of Promotions & The Arts (BOPA) featured this major new work by the internationally-acclaimed artist, Cai Guo Qiang at Light City in April 2018. Curated by Lance M. Fung of Fung Collaboratives, Fireflies is comprised of 27 illuminated kinetic sculptures. Over 900 handmade lanterns were attached to the top of 27 working pedicabs that festival goers enjoyed. Each lantern was handcrafted in Cai Guo-Qiang’s hometown of Quanzhou, China, drawing on memories of the traditional lantern festivals of the artist's childhood.
